launched at COP26 in Glasgow. A collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/news\/latest\/2021\/11\/university-and-industry-collaborate-to-demonstrate-at-cop26-how-hydrogen-technology-can-decarbonise-the-railways.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>University of Birmingham<\/strong>,<\/a> the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.porterbrook.co.uk\/hydroflex-cop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HydroFLEX<\/a><\/strong> uses 277kg of hydrogen fuel, resulting in zero direct emissions. With a 300-mile range and speeds of up to 100mph, this innovative vehicle is a significant step forward for the UK\u2019s hydrogen revolution.<\/p><p>The UK transport sector produces significant greenhouse gas emissions. So, it is particularly vital that these emissions are reduced and the sector becomes more environmentally friendly. Hydrogen is a vital low-carbon solution in the UK\u2019s toolbox, as the country strives to reach its net zero targets.<\/p><p>So, how has hydrogen impacted the UK transport sector, and what does the future hold for this zero carbon fuel?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d8d5993 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d8d5993\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How has hydrogen been incorporated so far?<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0960e35 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0960e35\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The roll-out of hydrogen is helping to bring down the UK\u2019s emissions. This green fuel is also providing flexible energy for power, heat and transport in various industry sectors.<\/p><p>Earlier this year the government announced a new <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/uk-hydrogen-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hydrogen Strategy<\/a><\/strong>. The strategy aims to develop a thriving low-carbon hydrogen sector in the UK. This is to meet an ambitious national goal of 5GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity, by 2030.<\/p><p>The strategy also outlines:<\/p><ul><li>How the UK will rapidly scale up production and lay the foundations for a low-carbon hydrogen economy, by 2030.<\/li><li>How the government will support innovation and stimulate investment during the 2020s. Again, to boost production.<\/li><\/ul><p>Earlier this year, London mayor Sadiq Khan introduced the first double-decker\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-london-57578043\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>hydrogen bus fleet in London<\/strong><\/a>. The buses joined over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.gov.uk\/press-releases\/mayoral\/englands-first-hydrogen-double-deckers-launched\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>500 electric buses<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in the UK as part of the Go-Ahead London fleet. This has boosted London\u2019s acceleration towards the goal of zero emissions by 2030. Helping to ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of environmental progress.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-a596834 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a596834\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-69e957a4\" data-id=\"69e957a4\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eb8c4af elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"eb8c4af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The future of hydrogen<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-82cb217 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"82cb217\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>While hydrogen has been identified as an essential low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels, the UK still has a long way to go before it can reach its potential. A significant, rapid scale-up of resources is needed in order to reach the country\u2019s ambitious net zero targets.<\/p><p>Shoreham Port in West Sussex has recently signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowe.com\/uk\/insights\/plastic-packaging-tax#:~:text=Key%20points,plastic%20when%20measured%20by%20weight.&amp;text=The%20tax%20will%20be%20charged,of%20%C2%A3200%20per%20tonne.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>collaboration agreement<\/strong><\/a> with H2 Green to install a new <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edie.net\/news\/8\/Major-green-hydrogen-facility-planned-for-West-Sussex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major green hydrogen facility<\/a><\/strong>. Under the two-year agreement, H2 Green (a subsidiary of energy developer, Getech) will develop new onshore wind and solar power generation capacity. As well as an electrolysis facility.<\/p><p>Before the final investment in 2022, H2 Green will need to finalise the engineering designs and work (which is part of the for the planning permission requirements). The green hydrogen hub will serve the transport sector and help other businesses, including timber and steel handling as well as water treatment.<\/p><p>Decarbonising the UK\u2019s railway system is set to be another big step towards its net zero goals. Shifting to a low-carbon rail network will reduce emissions and encourage biodiversity on railway land.
